In a research project sponsored by the National Center for the Study of Writing and Literacy to study the use of portfolios in teaching writing, Pam Perfumo and Bob Calfee develop a new approach: "video visits," wherein specific sites were asked to videotape a discussion session around their use of portfolios that could be mailed back to the center for viewing and analysis. The article presents their findings on portfolio use and evaluates the video visit as a form of research.
