University Inspires Passion for Teaching Writing

Summary: With a grant from the National Writing Project, the University of Illinois is launching its own writing project site, starting with a monthlong collaborative writing course for about 20 area teachers.

The project is "aimed at helping teachers improve their teaching of writing," said Gail Hawisher, director of the Center for Writing Studies and an English professor.
It's also about giving teachers a community of fellow teacher-writers, said Sarah McCarthey, a literature professor and the associate head of graduate programs in curriculum and instruction, and making writing a collaborative experience instead of an isolating one.
To do that, teachers will work to gain both writing skills and confidence, with the idea that better writers will make better teachers of writing.
