Southeast Regional Mini-Inservice Institute: A Working Retreat
July 17–19, 2008
Whispering Woods Hotel and Conference Center
Olive Branch, Mississippi
Hosted by the Mississippi Writing/Thinking Institute
This working retreat is designed to bring together two-person teams from writing project sites and provide them with information, time, and resources for broadening and expanding their site's work in schools. Whether you are rethinking already existing programs or conceiving of new ones, this retreat is designed to help you consider successful models and programs and extend your site's capacity for providing inservice work.
The institute will be planned and facilitated by a team of directors and teacher-consultants from sites across the country, and will include facilitated discussions, time for work in large and small groups, and planning time for individual teams.
The retreat's goals are to support site teams in
- networking with NWP site leaders from across the region
- thinking about building capacity for inservice work at their site
- examining successful models of inservice and the theory behind their success
- developing a strategic plan for extending and broadening the site's inservice work.
Details
Teams should plan to arrive at the conference center by 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 17 for a 6:30 p.m. kick-off dinner and to stay through 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 19.
Cost
NWP will cover the cost of the retreat, including lodging (all rooms double occupancy) and meals, once participants arrive. Local writing project sites will be expected to cover the cost of the team's travel to and from the Whispering Woods Hotel and Conference Center.
Selecting Your Site's Team
The site team attending should include key site leaders who have a part in developing and supporting inservice work at the site. Ideally, a director or co-director should be part of the two-member team. Team members should be familiar with the inservice needs and interests of teachers and schools in the site's service area, inservice work currently being offered, and the teacher-consultant community. Team members selected should be committed to working with the site's leadership during the next year on moving forward with plans developed at the institute.
